R1234yf
Sicherheitsklasse A2L. GWP <1.
R1234yf (HFO-1234yf) is a low-GWP refrigerant developed for automotive air-conditioning systems. It has become one of the primary refrigerants used in modern passenger cars and light commercial vehicles, replacing R134a in many new vehicle applications.
R1234yf belongs to the HFO (Hydrofluoroolefin) refrigerant family and offers significantly lower climate impact than R134a. It has zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) and a Global Warming Potential (GWP) below 1 on a 100-year basis under newer assessment values.
R1234yf is classified as an A2L refrigerant, meaning it has lower toxicity and is mildly flammable. Because of this classification, correct service procedures, suitable equipment and technician training are important when working with R1234yf systems.
Key Characteristics
- Refrigerant designation: R1234yf
- Chemical name: 2,3,3,3-Tetrafluoropropene
- Chemical formula: C₃H₂F₄
- Refrigerant family: HFO
- Safety classification: A2L – lower toxicity, mildly flammable
- Ozone Depletion Potential: 0
- Global Warming Potential: below 1 on a 100-year basis under newer assessment values
- Boiling point: approximately –29.5°C
- Commonly used with specially approved PAG or POE lubricants, depending on the vehicle and compressor design
Automotive Applications
R1234yf is widely used in modern automotive air-conditioning and thermal management systems, including:
- Passenger cars
- Hybrid vehicles
- Plug-in hybrid vehicles
- Electric vehicles
- Light commercial vehicles
- Selected commercial and specialist vehicle applications
Its thermodynamic characteristics allow R1234yf systems to operate using system architectures similar to those traditionally used with R134a, although components, service connections, equipment and procedures are specifically designed or approved for R1234yf.
Service & Maintenance
R1234yf systems should only be serviced using equipment, tools and procedures suitable for A2L refrigerants and in accordance with applicable regulations and vehicle-manufacturer specifications.
Professional servicing can include refrigerant identification, recovery, evacuation, leak testing, accurate refrigerant charging, lubricant management and system performance testing.
Special attention should be given to refrigerant purity, correct charge quantity and lubricant type. Mixing R1234yf with other refrigerants can affect system performance, service equipment and refrigerant recovery.
Because R1234yf is mildly flammable, technicians should also follow appropriate workshop safety procedures and use equipment specifically approved for the refrigerant.
R1234yf should never be intentionally released into the atmosphere. Refrigerant should be properly recovered using suitable A/C service equipment.
R1234yf and Modern Vehicle Thermal Management
R1234yf is used not only in conventional A/C systems but also in increasingly sophisticated thermal management systems found in hybrid and electric vehicles.
These systems may integrate cabin cooling, battery cooling and other vehicle thermal-management functions. This makes correct diagnostics, refrigerant handling and understanding of the complete thermal management system increasingly important for professional workshops.
Nunchi Climate Group provides technical training, A/C service equipment, tools and technical solutions for R1234yf and other current and future automotive refrigerants.
