R455A
Classe di sicurezza A2L. GWP ~146.
R455A is a low-GWP refrigerant blend developed for refrigeration, air-conditioning and heat-pump applications where reduced environmental impact and good system efficiency are important.
R455A combines HFO, HFC and CO₂ refrigerant technology to achieve a significantly lower Global Warming Potential than traditional HFC refrigerants such as R134a and R404A.
It is a zeotropic blend of R1234yf, R32 and R744 (CO₂) and has zero Ozone Depletion Potential. R455A is classified as an A2L refrigerant, meaning lower toxicity and mild flammability.
Key Characteristics
- Refrigerant designation: R455A
- Refrigerant type: Zeotropic blend
- Components: R1234yf / R32 / R744 (CO₂)
- Composition: approximately 75.5% R1234yf / 21.5% R32 / 3% R744 by mass
- Safety classification: A2L – lower toxicity, mildly flammable
- Ozone Depletion Potential: 0
- Global Warming Potential: approximately 146 (AR4 basis)
- Low-GWP refrigerant technology
- Good thermodynamic and energy-efficiency characteristics
- Suitable for selected refrigeration and heat-pump applications
- Has temperature glide due to its zeotropic composition
- Applications
R455A has primarily been developed for commercial refrigeration and other refrigeration or heat-pump applications requiring a low-GWP alternative.
Typical applications can include:
- Commercial refrigeration
- Refrigerated display equipment
- Cold rooms
- Transport refrigeration
- Heat-pump systems
- Chillers and cooling equipment
- Other low- and medium-temperature refrigeration applications
Its combination of low GWP and thermodynamic performance also makes R455A relevant when evaluating future refrigerant technologies for mobile and automotive thermal-management applications.
Any automotive use must, however, be specifically designed, validated and approved for R455A rather than assuming compatibility with an existing vehicle refrigerant system.
R455A and Automotive Thermal Management
Modern electric and hybrid vehicles require increasingly sophisticated thermal-management systems. These systems can combine several different thermal functions, including:
- Cabin cooling
- Cabin heating
- Battery cooling and heating
- Electric motor cooling
- Power electronics cooling
- Heat-pump operation
- Waste-heat recovery
Low-GWP refrigerants such as R455A demonstrate how different HFO, HFC and natural refrigerant components can be combined to achieve specific performance, environmental and safety characteristics.
For automotive applications, refrigerant selection must consider not only GWP but also system pressure, temperature range, efficiency, flammability, temperature glide, compressor technology, component compatibility and overall system architecture.
Temperature Glide
An important characteristic of R455A is that it is a zeotropic refrigerant blend.
Unlike a single-component refrigerant, R455A does not evaporate and condense at one constant temperature at a given pressure. Instead, its temperature changes during the phase-change process. This is known as temperature glide.
Technicians working with R455A therefore need to understand concepts such as:
- Bubble-point temperature
- Dew-point temperature
- Pressure/temperature relationships
- Superheat
- Subcooling
- Correct charging procedures
Understanding these characteristics is important for accurate system diagnostics and performance evaluation.
Service & Safety
Because R455A is classified as A2L, service equipment, tools and workshop procedures must be suitable for mildly flammable refrigerants.
Professional servicing may include:
- Refrigerant identification
- Refrigerant recovery
- Leak detection
- Vacuum procedures
- Accurate refrigerant charging
- Pressure and temperature diagnostics
- Lubricant management
- System performance testing
Because R455A is a zeotropic blend, it should normally be charged in the liquid phase to help maintain the correct refrigerant composition.
Technicians should always follow applicable regulations, refrigerant supplier instructions and equipment or system manufacturer procedures.
Refrigerant should never be intentionally released into the atmosphere and should always be recovered using suitable professional equipment.
Low-GWP Refrigerant Technology
With a GWP significantly below many traditional HFC refrigerants, R455A represents an important development in the transition toward lower environmental impact refrigeration and thermal-management technologies.
Its combination of low GWP, zero ODP and useful thermodynamic characteristics makes it relevant for a range of modern refrigeration and heat-pump applications.
For automotive applications, R455A should only be used in systems specifically designed, validated or approved for the refrigerant.
