R290

Classe di sicurezza A3. GWP molto basso.

R290, commonly known as propane, is a natural hydrocarbon refrigerant with extremely low Global Warming Potential and zero Ozone Depletion Potential. It is increasingly being evaluated and introduced in refrigeration, air-conditioning and heat-pump applications where high efficiency and very low environmental impact are important.

R290 offers excellent thermodynamic properties and can provide high energy efficiency across a wide operating range. These characteristics make it particularly interesting for future automotive air-conditioning, heat-pump and electric-vehicle thermal management systems.

Unlike many fluorinated refrigerants, R290 is a naturally occurring hydrocarbon and is not an HFC or HFO.

Key Characteristics

  • Refrigerant designation: R290
  • Common name: Propane
  • Chemical formula: C₃H₈
  • Refrigerant family: Hydrocarbon (HC)
  • Safety classification: A3 – lower toxicity, higher flammability
  • Ozone Depletion Potential: 0
  • Global Warming Potential: very low
  • Boiling point: approximately –42°C
  • Excellent thermodynamic properties
  • High potential energy efficiency
  • Suitable for both cooling and heat-pump applications
  • Natural refrigerant technology
  • Automotive & EV Applications

R290 is attracting increasing attention for future automotive thermal-management systems, particularly for electric vehicles and heat pumps.

Potential automotive applications include:

  • Electric vehicle air-conditioning
  • EV heat-pump systems
  • Cabin cooling and heating
  • Battery thermal management
  • Integrated vehicle thermal-management systems
  • Commercial vehicles
  • Buses and coaches
  • Specialist vehicles

For electric vehicles, efficient thermal management is especially important because cabin heating and cooling directly affect energy consumption and potentially vehicle driving range.

R290’s thermodynamic characteristics can make it an interesting option for systems designed to provide efficient cooling and heating across a broad range of operating conditions.

R290 Heat Pump Systems

An automotive R290 heat-pump system can use the same refrigerant circuit to provide both cooling and heating.

Depending on the vehicle architecture, the thermal-management system may integrate several functions, including:

  • Cabin cooling
  • Cabin heating
  • Battery cooling
  • Battery heating
  • Electric motor and power electronics cooling
  • Waste-heat recovery
  • Pre-conditioning of the vehicle and battery

This integrated approach can improve overall thermal-management efficiency and reduce the amount of electrical energy required for heating and cooling.

Safety & Flammability

One of the most important differences between R290 and traditional automotive refrigerants is its A3 safety classification.

R290 is highly flammable. Vehicle systems using R290 therefore require engineering controls specifically designed for hydrocarbon refrigerants.

Depending on the system and application, these can include:

  • Reduced refrigerant charge
  • Refrigerant leak detection
  • Gas sensors
  • Ventilation strategies
  • Appropriate electrical components
  • Controlled refrigerant routing
  • System isolation strategies
  • Dedicated service connections
  • Suitable recovery and service equipment

Technicians working with R290 must understand the additional safety requirements associated with flammable refrigerants.

Service & Maintenance

R290 automotive systems should only be serviced using equipment, tools and procedures specifically suitable for hydrocarbon and A3 refrigerants.

Professional servicing may include:

  • Refrigerant identification
  • Safe refrigerant recovery
  • Leak detection
  • Pressure and temperature diagnostics
  • Vacuum procedures
  • Accurate refrigerant charging
  • Lubricant management
  • Gas-sensor and safety-system checks
  • System performance testing

Ignition sources must be appropriately controlled, and the work area must meet the applicable safety and ventilation requirements.

R290 should not simply be used as a drop-in replacement for R134a, R1234yf or another automotive refrigerant. The complete vehicle A/C or heat-pump system must be specifically designed, validated or appropriately approved for R290 operation.

R290 and the Future of Automotive Thermal Management

The automotive industry continues to investigate refrigerants with very low climate impact as vehicle thermal-management requirements become increasingly complex.

R290 combines very low GWP, zero ODP and strong thermodynamic performance, making it an important technology to consider for future vehicle A/C and heat-pump systems.

Its higher flammability means that system design, component selection, refrigerant charge, service equipment and technician training are critical parts of its safe implementation.

As electric vehicles continue to develop, R290 has the potential to play a role in highly integrated thermal-management systems combining cabin comfort, battery conditioning, powertrain cooling and heat-pump operation.
