R513A

Turvallisuusluokka A1. GWP ~630.

R513A is a lower-GWP refrigerant blend developed as an alternative to R134a in a range of refrigeration and air-conditioning applications. It offers thermodynamic characteristics relatively close to R134a while providing a significant reduction in Global Warming Potential.

R513A is a blend of R134a and R1234yf. It is classified as an A1 refrigerant, meaning lower toxicity with no flame propagation under its standard safety classification. This makes R513A particularly interesting for applications where a lower-GWP alternative to R134a is desired while maintaining an A1 safety classification.

Key Characteristics

  • Refrigerant designation: R513A
  • Refrigerant type: Azeotropic blend
  • Components: R134a / R1234yf
  • Composition: approximately 44% R134a / 56% R1234yf by mass
  • Refrigerant families: HFC/HFO blend
  • Safety classification: A1 – lower toxicity, no flame propagation
  • Ozone Depletion Potential: 0
  • Global Warming Potential: approximately 630 (AR4 basis)
  • Significantly lower GWP than R134a
  • Operating pressures and characteristics relatively close to R134a
  • Very low temperature glide
  • Automotive & Mobile Applications

R513A can be relevant for selected mobile air-conditioning applications where an A1 lower-GWP refrigerant is required and its use is technically suitable and legally permitted.

Potential applications can include:

  • Buses and coaches
  • Trucks and commercial vehicles
  • Agricultural vehicles
  • Construction and off-highway equipment
  • Specialist vehicles
  • Larger mobile air-conditioning systems
  • Selected electric and hybrid vehicle thermal-management applications

R513A can be particularly interesting for bus and coach A/C systems, where larger refrigerant charges can make reducing the overall GWP of the refrigerant especially relevant.

Alternative to R134a

Because R513A has operating characteristics relatively close to R134a, it can be considered as an alternative in selected R134a applications.

However, replacing R134a with R513A should not automatically be treated as a simple refrigerant exchange. System compatibility, lubricant, seals, hoses, compressor characteristics, expansion devices and other components should be evaluated before conversion.

Any retrofit should follow an approved procedure and comply with applicable regulations and the requirements of the vehicle, A/C system and component manufacturers.

Retrofit from R134a to R513A

Where a retrofit is technically approved and legally permitted, a professional procedure may include:

  • Recovering the existing R134a
  • Recording the original refrigerant and lubricant quantities
  • Inspecting the complete A/C system
  • Flushing the system where required by the approved retrofit procedure
  • Checking lubricant type, condition and quantity
  • Checking component and material compatibility
  • Replacing seals, service fittings or other components where required
  • Performing vacuum and leak testing
  • Charging the specified quantity of R513A
  • Applying the appropriate refrigerant/retrofit identification label
  • Checking operating pressures and temperatures
  • Verifying cooling capacity and overall system performance

The correct R513A charge quantity should be determined according to the approved retrofit procedure rather than automatically using the original R134a charge quantity.

Service & Maintenance

R513A systems should be serviced using suitable refrigerant recovery, evacuation and charging equipment. Correct refrigerant identification is important to prevent cross-contamination with R134a, R1234yf or other refrigerants.

Although R513A is classified as A1, technicians should always follow applicable regulations, workshop safety procedures and manufacturer service instructions.

Refrigerant should never be intentionally released into the atmosphere and should always be recovered using suitable professional equipment.

Lower-GWP A1 Refrigerant Technology

R513A combines the familiar operating characteristics of R134a-type systems with a substantially lower GWP and an A1 safety classification.

This combination makes R513A an interesting refrigerant for selected automotive, bus, coach and commercial vehicle A/C applications where reducing environmental impact while maintaining a non-flammable refrigerant classification is an important consideration.

Nunchi Climate Group provides technical training, retrofit solutions, A/C service equipment, tools and technical support for R513A, R134a and other current and future automotive refrigerants.
