R134a
Säkerhetsklass A1. GWP ~1,430.
R134a (HFC-134a) is a hydrofluorocarbon refrigerant that has been widely used in automotive air-conditioning systems for many years. It replaced R12 in most vehicle A/C applications and became one of the most common refrigerants used in passenger cars, commercial vehicles, trucks, buses and coaches.
R134a is classified as an A1 refrigerant, meaning it has low toxicity and is non-flammable under its standard safety classification. It has zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) but a relatively high Global Warming Potential (GWP) of approximately 1,430.
Key Characteristics
- Refrigerant designation: R134a
- Chemical name: 1,1,1,2-Tetrafluoroethane
- Chemical formula: C₂H₂F₄
- Refrigerant family: HFC
- Safety classification: A1 – lower toxicity, no flame propagation
- Ozone Depletion Potential: 0
- Global Warming Potential: approximately 1,430
- Boiling point: approximately –26.1°C
- Commonly used with PAG oil in automotive A/C applications
- Automotive Applications
R134a has been extensively used in automotive air-conditioning systems, including:
- Passenger cars
- Light commercial vehicles
- Trucks
- Buses and coaches
- Agricultural and construction vehicles
- Off-highway and specialist vehicles
Although newer vehicles increasingly use lower-GWP refrigerants, a very large number of R134a systems remain in operation worldwide. This means that correct servicing, refrigerant recovery, leak detection, evacuation, charging and system diagnostics continue to be important workshop skills.
Service & Maintenance
R134a systems should always be serviced using equipment and procedures suitable for the refrigerant and in accordance with applicable regulations and vehicle-manufacturer specifications.
Professional servicing should include correct refrigerant identification, recovery of the existing refrigerant, vacuum and leak testing, accurate refrigerant charging, correct lubricant management and verification of system performance.
Never intentionally release R134a into the atmosphere. Refrigerant should be properly recovered using suitable recovery or A/C service equipment.
The Future of R134a
Because of its relatively high GWP, the use of R134a is being reduced or restricted in many applications and markets. Lower-GWP refrigerants are increasingly being introduced for new systems.
However, millions of existing vehicles and mobile A/C systems still use R134a, making knowledge of the refrigerant, its characteristics and correct service procedures an important part of professional automotive A/C servicing.
